What is the oldest powertrain currently on sale in a car or truck in the US market?

I want engine and transmission combination here (if it’s a single-speed, then I want reduction boxes between the engine and the axle). Can you beat the Yaris?

Because that’s my entry - the 2018 Toyota Yaris, using the same 1NZ-FE engine and U340E automatic transmission combination that the 2000 Toyota Echo had.

The WRX STi is using an EJ motor whose roots stretch back to the 1980's.

Bentley Mulsanne’s 6.75 liter V8 was first introduced in 1959.

Whatever few Hondas are still using the J-series V6, which dates back to the mid-late 1990s.

I think that’s the SUVs and minivans, and they’ve gotten updates to the engine, and new transmissions, though.

Although the EJ257 is newer than model year 2000 - 2004, it looks like?

That might actually be the oldest engine family still in production in a US-market car, although the L410HT debuted with the Mulsanne for model year 2010, as far as I can tell, and it’s using a ZF 8HP gearbox, which is pretty modern.

I was wondering this a while ago. I think the Yaris is the oldest drivetrain, any others have had meaningful updates and/or have a different transmission

I know this is the oldest chassis on sale still but I’m not sure if the powertrain has been updated.

Can I just win if I say the Chevrolet small block since 1953? Assuming an LS, LT, TBI, and everything carbureted before that are all the same because of push rods?! This is harder than I’d have thought...

I’m gonna cheat a bit and say that the Kawasaki KLR has had the same single cylinder and 5 speed box since the mid 80s. The Suzuki DR650 isn’t far behind...

Powertrains have been updated, the oldest engine in the current one is I think the L96 from 2010 or so.

The Dodge Journey uses an 4 cylinder introduced in 2007, however the 4 speed automatic found on base models is a mere update to a transmission first introduced in 1989.

There’s a reason I didn’t say motorcycles, it’d be too easy, because of things like that. Actually, though, a lot of shit now has to have emissions controls and fuel injection in the past few years...

Nissan’s been putting the same VQ40DE in their midsize SUV’s and the Frontier since forever. Same basic architecture since the 1995 Maxima’s 3.0L VQ.

I’m sure some of the transmissions are ancient too. They Jayco 5-speed automatic was used since 2003 I think, and the 6-speed manual may based on an older gearbox.

I think I remember someone saying the 4 cylinder Duramax diesel that is in the Chevy Colorado is actually a VM motori diesel. And that engine was even in the 3rd gen caravans back in the late 90's!

It’s based on that family, but not that exact engine - it’s been very heavily updated even since the last time we got it in the US, in the 2005-2006 Jeep Liberty.

Sadly the 4 speed auto it’s saddled with in the Yaris is awful. I’d like to drive a manual Yaris, I imagine it would be a lot better

That 8.8 isn’t that old, though, and even the 8.1 (which hasn’t been made for quite a while) is newer than the 1NZ-FE. And, that’s ignoring transmissions.

you kidding, a big block chevy, is a big block chevy. same architecture, same style heads, same style crank, same external dimensions, and mounting surfaces since the early 60s......

...... and the allison 4 speed has been around since the early 70's mostly unchanged........

The VQ came out in the mid 90s, but the VQ35DE was later - 2000 in Japan, 2001 in the US.

However, I don’t think there’s any RWD applications of it remaining (the VQ35HR and VQ37VHR replacing it), and all of the original FWD applications moved from automatics to CVTs, so it fails there.

The 8.8 isn’t compatable with any BBC. It’s on the design. The 8.1 also shares nothing with even the Vortec 454.

It’s not a powerful engine under any guise, but it has a surprising amount of midrange torque and doesn’t complain about being flogged.

Toyota Yaris Hybrid. 1NZ-FXE Plus CVT. Pretty much the same drivetrain as the original Prius from 1997. Also applies to the Prius C/ Aqua, Corolla Hybrid and Sienta Hybrid.

HOWEVER this is not the same 1NZ-FXE as the XW10, because it was discontinued in 2009 and reintroduced in 2012 fitted to the new smaller Hybrids, with higher compression and no belt-driven accessories.

It’s not the same transmission at all - I thought of it though, because it is the same engine code as what we would’ve called the MY1998 Prius.

(There’s some really major changes between the P110 transaxle in the NHW10 Prius, and the P510 transaxle in the Aqua/Prius c/Vitz/Yaris/Corolla Axio/Corolla Fielder/Sienta hybrids. It’s not even minor tweaks (like the P111 in the NHW11, and the P112 in the NHW20), they completely redesigned it to add the MG2 reduction box, and remove the chain.)

i dunno, i think you guys got all caught up on some sort of “exact dimensions only” mess........ that wasnt explicitly clear from the go.....

i hear powertrain combination, and i think bbc, allison, done.......or subaru boxer 4, 5 speed, done.

you guys just for some reason, seem like you were looking for excuses to exclude a few answers you just didnt like.....
